These stars hold a special place in Dutch royal history. They were originally part of a nineteenth-century collection belonging to Queen Emma, wife of King Willem III and mother of Queen Wilhelmina. The set includes one large star with twelve points and several smaller stars with ten points. Máxima chose the large star and two of the smaller stars to adorn her outfit, adding a touch of unexpected sparkle to her ensemble.
The diamond stars have a fascinating history. They were frequently worn atop Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, which is still worn today. Queen Wilhelmina, Emma’s daughter, wore this setting of the tiara in a 1937 portrait. Interestingly, Máxima has also paired the diamond star tiara and the stars-on-the-waist in the past, as seen during the Israeli state banquet in 2013.
The Dutch royal family has two sets of diamond stars. The first set, with ten points and sharper, less open settings, was used to create Máxima’s own bridal diadem in 2002. This diadem, known as the Pearl Button Tiara, features five of these stars on a festoon base. The second set of stars has been worn by other family members, including Princess Beatrix and Princess Amalia.
